Each case study report consists of three parts:
Description of the development initiative
The description should give a vivid impression of the rural development initiative, including photos of the natural environment and the initiative's facilities. It should also document the project's basic characteristics, such as the names of the leaders, organizational structure, financial basis, connection to other initiatives, etc. We have developed a detailed questionnaire that is used during the field work to collect this information (see an abbreviated list of question). The description should cover all five dimensions of our theoretical concept, including the human resources, the political context, or the implemented technology.
Statistical material
Before we visit a rural development initiative we always try to collect extensive background material from the national statistical system, such as basic demographic and economic indicators for the village or the district. Typically, only general data are available from the national statistics. We therefore try to collect additional statistical information locally.
Brief evaluation
For each development initiative we try to give a brief evaluation on the basis of our questionnaire. The only purpose of this evaluation is to put the initiative into the context of the five dimensions of our theoretical concept. It is not a detailed financial, organizational, or political evaluation of the project!
In total, we plan to do some 40 to 45 case studies in various European countries. This explains, why each case study report has to be relatively short. It cannot be compared with a detailed technical evaluation. The main purpose of the case studies is to collect, describe, and briefly evaluate innovative ideas for rural development all over Europe.
