Environmentally Compatible Energy Strategies (ECS)

After years of successfully maintaining IIASA’s leading position in developing and disseminating long-term global energy-economic-environmental (E3) scenarios, the ECS program was succeeded in 2006 by a new Energy Program.

The overall long-term objective of the Environmentally Compatible Energy Strategies (ECS) Program was to maintain its leading role in developing and disseminating long-term global energy-economic-environmental (E3) scenarios that synthesized advances made throughout the project. The ECS Program focused on:

  • Advancement in the state-of-the-art in modeling technological change within energy models;
  • Expanded the existing long-term global energy modeling framework to include sinks and non-CO2 greenhouse gases;
  • Development in modeling energy infrastructure evolution within energy models in order to assess alternative long-term investment strategies;
  • Maintaining and expanding up-to-date, extensive, accessible databases on technologies and resources in order to support research on technology dynamics, grid evolution, and their incorporation in energy models.
