Furthermore, the program supports subject-oriented IIASA-based studies and stimulates new inter-program initiatives. Global dynamical optimization principles are at the core of the analysis of models of technological changes, knowledge absorption, and the investment and allocation of economic resources. The competition of firms on markets of new technologies, rational market behaviors, market equilibria, and sustainable techno-economic trajectories are being explored. The environment-oriented program’s studies deal with problems of pollution control and risk assessment. Focus is on the approaches to the estimation of losses due to large-scale catastrophes (earthquakes, forest fires, explosions) and the optimization of preventive counter-measures via governmental and insurance regulation.
