IFAC TECHNICAL COMMITTEE 2.4

Activities of TC 2.4

Under the auspices of Technical Commitee 2.4 on Oprimal Control the cross-disciplinary project is initiated at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria. The project focuses on analyzing the driving forces and sustainability factors behind economic growth from both methodological and applied perspectives.

The project includes research activities. Research framework is based on endogenous growth theory and comprises various techniques – analysis of historical evidence; insights into spatial dimensions of economic development including technology transfer; assessment of energy use; studies of social, institutional and environmental factors of economic growth. Models have rather high level of aggregation. Mathematical and econometric analyses are being used to explain both past developments and justify scenarios for a future development of industry sectors, countries and world regions.

The project includes workshops, and seminars:

A series of General Seminars on Economic Growth is regularly working at IIASA. The major goal of the General Seminars on Economic Growth is to provide a creative environment for matching different disciplinary approaches to studying economic growth.

The Symposium “Applications of Dynamic Systems to Economic Growth with Environment” was held at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) on the 7th-8th of November. The activity addressed the issues of sustainability of economic growth in changing environment, global warming and exhausting energy resources, technological change, and also focuses on explanations of significant fluctuations in countries’ growth rates. The presentations focused on analysis of historical evidences of economic growth in relation to environmental policy, technological change, development of transport infrastructure, population issues and environmental mortality. Totally, 26 participants from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, USA, took part in symposium with 16 presentations.

The Management of Technology Workshops are organized jointly by IIASA and Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan. The Management of Technology activity addresses the issues of sustainability of economic growth, institutional and technological change, and also focuses on explanations of significant fluctuations in countries’ growth rates. Research includes analysis of historical evidences of economic growth in relation to innovation processes; spatial dimensions in economic development; entrepreneurial activities; and modern strategies of commercialization of innovations.

All interested scientists are invited to take part in IIASA's project "Driving Forces of Economic Growth".
