As of July 1, all IIASA activities related to catastrophes in developing countries will continue as part of the Risk, Modeling and Society (RMS) Project from which the CAT Project originally evolved.

The Natural Catastrophes and Developing Countries (CAT) Project of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) ran from September 1999 through June 2001 as part of a research partnership with the World Bank's Disaster Management Facility and the Swiss Reinsurance Company. The project developed a modeling technique to integrate direct estimated costs of natural disasters to economic planning models for developing countries. The modeling work created a platform to help interested parties evaluate tools for financing the cost of post-disaster reconstruction.

The CAT applied the methodology in three country examples for Argentina, Honduras, and Nicaragua. For more information about this research, please visit this website or contact us via e-mail at cat.staff@iiasa.ac.at.
