    Abstract

Transitions to New Technologies Program (TNT)

The research objectives of the Transitions to New Technologies (TNT) Program are (1) to better understand and describe the diffusion of new technologies in time and space; (2) to assess the economic, social and environmental implications of technology diffusion scenarios; and (3) to assist policy making in developing operational methods that capture, and policy instruments that account for, the main features of technological innovation and diffusion.

TNT encourages application and YSSP proposals particularly in the following areas:
a) comparative technology policy assessments on success/failures of: technology scaling; maintenance of innovation diversity; and international technology diffusion particularly in energy/environment
b) historical analysis of technological development trajectories including performance, costs, market structure, and deployment rates in energy, transport, and information/communication systems
c) model prototyping/development based on agent-based models of technological complexity
d) technology diffusion models incorporating uncertainty and increasing returns to adoption

Applicants may contact the program leader and YSSP representative Arnulf Gruebler (gruebler@iiasa.ac.at) for any scientific related questions. For more information about the TNT program check its web site. Any application should make explicit reference to ongoing TNT research work and publications and explain how it builds upon and contributes to TNT’s research objectives.
