Forestry
Program
(FOR)
Global Change and Forests is the overarching focus of research in the Forestry Program (FOR). This research addresses management of the forest sector as well as interaction of the forest sector with environmental and non-environmental sectors.
Because the scope is very broad, FOR has decided to concentrate, during the 2006–2010 planning period, its efforts on three major issues:
(1) Greenhouse Gas Cycling and Terrestrial Ecosystems,
(2) Global Impacts of Forest Sector Development and Emerging Economies and
(3) International Governance of Forests.
The objective of the first task is to gain better understanding of the exchange of greenhouse (GHG) fluxes, including their uncertainties, between the terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere.
The research questions the second task addresses are:
(a) how much wood can the emerging economies/forest centers of China and India supply on a sustainable basis,
(b) what will the future consumption of forest products be in China and India and
(c) what are the global impacts of the development of the forest sectors in China and India.
The third task is to analyze the relevance and effectiveness of international agreements related to forests. In carrying out this research, FOR cooperates with international and national research institutes working on the same issues.
Applicants are encouraged to contact the program representative, Florian Kraxner (kraxner@iiasa.ac.at) for
any scientific related questions. For more information about the FOR
program check the web
