How to achieve a global transformation towards a climate-friendly, sustainable future?
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU)

Speakers:

  • Hans Joachim Schellnhuber – Chair WBGU; Director, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK): “The challenges of international climate policy” (pdf, 2.4MB)
  • Dirk Messner – Vice Chair WGBU; Director of the German Development Institute (DIE): "A Social Contract for Sustainability" (pdf , 5MB)
  • Nebojsa Nakicenovic – Deputy Director, IIASA; Professor, TU Wien and Member of WBGU: Global energy transformation: decarbonization and efficiency revolution” (pdf 17.3MB)
  • Michael Obersteiner – Program Leader, Ecosystems Services and Management, IIASA: “Managing land and natural resources within planetary boundaries”

Speakers will outline the policy options and strategies that will enable a global transformation towards a climate-friendly sustainable future. WBGU’s new report “World in Transition – A Social Contract for Sustainability” (www.wbgu.de) outlines the urgency of a ‘post-fossil-fuel’ economic strategy and the social and political changes this implies at national and international levels. As key entry points for achieving and sustaining deep emissions cuts, speakers will then outline the potential in energy systems for achieving an energy transformation led by a decarbonization and efficiency revolution (www.iiasa.ac.at/Research/ENE/index.html). The significant interactions between meeting climate and energy objectives and sustainable management of land and natural resources are detailed (www.iiasa.ac.at//Research/ESM/index.html). Science based resource efficiency strategies that exploit the many synergies between environmental and social policies are presented.
